A beautiful day for Day 1 of our ride. Temps in the 40's at the start, warming up to 70's by the afternoon, with sunny skies. No fog, as in previous RTW rides. After group photos of old riders, new riders, and our 2010 North group (below), everyone set off from Astoria at about 8AM.

I rode with Mark Koltz and Jeff Douglas most of the day. We dogged it, taking seven hours to cover a four and a half hour easy ride. By the time we finished, there was only one other rider behind us, not that it mattered. We had a nice relaxing time.
A midday view of the coast |
Our route today was mostly on US 101. After the first ten miles, the road mostly hugged the coast, making about four climbs up to 400 or 500 feet elevation and dipping inland around a few bays and a river. Though we rode slow and stopped often, it was a tough ride for me until I discovered a tire rub and fixed it. After that, it was smooth sailing.
Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach |
Our route took us through Seaside, Cannon Beach, Manzanita, Nehalem, Wheeler, Rockaway Beach, and Garabaldi. Traffic was heavy with Labor Day weekend visitors, and the road was rough in many places. The views were often spectacular.

Our final stop was at the Tillamook Cheese Factory to sample several types of cheese. My favorite, the Colby Jack cheese.
